Description of Course
This course will introduce participants to the concept of multiteam systems (MTS), also known as teams of teams and scaling teams. Participants will also learn about different leadership and structural models applied to multiteam systems.
Duration of Training
The Multiteam Systems Leadership Masters (DL-M4) master’s course requires 16 hours of training and can be taken as a two-day in-person training session, an online live virtual class, or as an asynchronous self-paced online training using The Flow System’s learning management system (LMS). This course can be taught publicly or privately to any organization.
Participants must complete the training before receiving a code allowing them to take the Multiteam Systems Leadership (DL-M4) assessment for accreditation. The fee for the assessment is included in the course fee for training attendees.
At the master’s level, participants will demonstrate an ability to apply the new knowledge and complete an online assessment. The master’s level courses’ application portion will be reviewed by peers and industry experts in their chosen field.
Participants who attend the training will have two attempts at the Scrum the Multiteam Systems Leadership (DL-M4) assessment. Participants who wish to forgo the training and jump straight to the assessment may do so but must first buy a code and will only have one attempt as opposed to two for people taking the training. You can buy a code below by clicking ‘Take Assessment.’
Objectives of Course
This course will introduce participants to multiteam systems (MTS), their structures, and methods of leading multiteam systems (e.g., functional leadership, boundary spanner).
Functional leadership focuses on leader-team interactions rather than leader- follower relationships found in traditional leadership theories. The role of the boundary spanner, a type of functional leader, is presented in this course. A boundary spanner manages the space between teams and between teams and the larger multiteam system. Alignment of the organization’s goals with the multiteam and team goals are also carried out by the boundary spanner.
Boundary spanners perform external team activities that support the functioning of teams. These external team activities are categorized into five types of activities: isolationist, scouting, ambassadorial, task coordination, and comprehensive. This course will expand on the competencies required for each of these five categories.
The concepts and leadership competencies that will be covered in this course are summarized below:
